ND United President -- Higher Ed employees nervous about budgets By Dave Thompson • May 8, 2020 The president of North Dakota United said he’s hearing some angst from the state’s college campuses about what might happen to budgets because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Oil demand has dropped, meaning oil tax revenues have been reduced. In his budget guidelines given to state agencies, Governor Burgum has said colleges should prepare budgets based on 90 percent of the current funding formula. Great River Energy to shutter Coal Creek plant in 2022 By Dave Thompson • May 7, 2020 Minnesota-based Great River Energy will be shutting down its Coal Creek Station power plant near Underwood in the second half of 2022. Coal Creek went into service in 1979. It is North Dakota’s largest power plant, producing 1,151 megawatts of power from lignite coal. Great River President and Chief Executive Officer David Saggau called it an economic decision. "Coal Creek Station is a safe, efficient and well-run plant," Saggau said. "However, it has lost value compared to other alternatives in recent years." Neel Kashkari said there are a lot of unknowns about the coronavirus, and efforts to control it will determine how fast the economy can re-open. The cases broken down by county are: Burgum: new Red River Valley COVID-19 task force; graduation ceremony guidelines By Dave Thompson • May 7, 2020 A new Red River Valley COVID 19 task force has been formed to help stem the spread of the coronavirus in the Fargo area. Governor Burgum announced the task force at his Wednesday briefing. Cass County has by far the largest number of positive COVID 19 cases in the state. Wednesday, the state Health Department reported six deaths in Cass County. Burgum told reporters the task force will be working on prevention and mitigation in Cass County and the Fargo-Moorhead metro area. And that includes ramping up testing.
